Laima's fascination with materials started at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. It wasn't just about art — it's about understanding what's underneath. Why does one pigment last 300 years while another fades in five? What makes clay plastic enough to throw but strong enough to fire? These questions pulled her deeper into the technical side of craft.
She graduated in 2010 with a degree in Applied Arts, but the real education came after. Five years teaching at the Panevėžys School of Design gave her something invaluable: direct contact with working artists who needed real answers about materials.
Around 2015, Laima noticed something that bothered her. Artists in Panevėžys and surrounding regions were either settling for subpar materials or ordering everything online from abroad. There wasn't a local resource — someone who actually understood both the technical requirements and the budget constraints. So she built one.
What started as a consulting side project became Panevėžys's first dedicated craft materials resource center. She built relationships with suppliers across Europe, tested products herself, and created a network that connected quality materials with the people who needed them. Studios stopped guessing. Individual artists had someone to ask.
Drsonyadoherty UAB brought her on in 2019, recognizing that her years of hands-on experience and extensive supplier networks could benefit a much larger audience. Today, she's creating comprehensive guides on everything from pigment permanence to clay body composition to thread durability. She's written over 50 technical articles that demystify what actually matters when choosing craft materials.
What drives her most? Making expert knowledge accessible. She doesn't believe understanding material science should be reserved for professionals. A hobbyist just starting with watercolors deserves the same quality information as a museum conservator.
